Paul Murphy MEP to campaign with SYRIZA ahead of Greek Elections

The United Left Alliance and Socialist MEP Paul Murphy will join with other left MEPs from across Europe in campaigning with SYRIZA ahead of the Greek general election this Sunday.

SYRIZA, the Greek Coalition of the Radical Left, came second in last month’s general election and looks set to build on this success later this week. Germany Rejects Ireland’s “Yes” Vote

Before the ink was dry on the Referendum result, Germany has rejected any deal for Ireland on bank debt saying that it would be a “negative signal” to re-open Ireland’s rescue arrangements.

“We see no need for movement at the moment” said  Martin Kotthaus, spokesman for Germanys Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble.

The European Commission has also warned against linking Ireland’s Yes vote with the request to ease the burden of the banking rescue.

People were bullied into accepting Austerity

In a statement today the ULA said the people were bullied into voting yes. The Government did not put up any good arguments in support of this treaty. They agreed a blackmail clause with the EU and then used it to bully the people. They said we had no choice even thoughthey took an active part in agreeing to link the treaty with access to funding in the future. Many of those who voted yes did so reluctantly.

Why you should vote No! – Information Evening / Public Meeting

The Campaign against the Austerity Treaty (CAAT) in Galway will host an information evening and public meeting on Thursday 17th. The event will aim to provide information on the Treaty and Referendum, as well as providing an opportunity for people to ask questions and engage in a broader discussion about the effects of austerity.

Accessible and jargon-free information on the treaty and referendum will be available on the night. A panel of speakers will talk through the reasons for opposing the treaty and for voting No, as well as answering questions and countering some of the misinformation and threats being made by the Yes side.

Confirmed speakers include Cllr. Catherine  Connolly, Workers’ Party general-secretary John Lowry, Sinn Féin representative Micheál Ó Fátharta and Liam O’Grady of the ULA.

All are welcome to attend and participate.
